Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of health-related states and events in defined populations, and the application of that knowledge to the prevention and control of disease. As the cornerstone of public health, it quantifies disease frequency, identifies risk factors and modes of transmission, tracks trends over time and place, and supplies the evidence that shapes policy and clinical practice. In tropical and infectious-disease contexts it is especially central to understanding outbreaks, coinfections, and the burden of communicable disease. Research in this area examines the epidemiology and histopathological patterns of thyroid disease, the management of seasonal influenza outbreaks in long-term care, and temporal trends in syphilis through multi-year retrospective analyses. Studies also address malaria and typhoid coinfection, the role of human papillomavirus in carcinogenesis, population-based colorectal cancer screening, narcolepsy prevalence, zoonotic and parasitic diseases in veterinary settings such as ovine fasciolosis and canine osteosarcoma, healthcare-worker practices around prophylaxis, and neurosurgical case reporting from low-resource regions.
