The remit

What belongs in this journal

A manuscript is within scope when it addresses a substantive question about animal biology or develops or evaluates a method for zoological research. Vertebrates and invertebrates are read on the same terms, at every level from the molecular to the ecological, in wild, captive, domestic, laboratory and collection-based work.

The journal is edited by a board of 15 members working in 8 countries. See the full board.

All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review. Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.

Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. They are independent of fees, membership, editorial roles and paid services.
